4 Steps to Build Your Capsule Wardrobe

There are so many benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe for your everyday life, for example mental clarity, saving money and not having to stress about what you wear anymore. You get to wear your favourite pieces everyday and make your wardrobe more sustainable. You could also help to improve your buying behaviour.

In this post we want to give you a practical plan on how to get started with building your own capsule wardrobe to make it easy for you as a beginner.

Step 1 : Choose a Base Colour

Either Black , Navy or Grey. Choose a Base Colour that you like to wear quite often. For example, start with adding a simple black pair of skinny jeans, a black bomber or leather jacket and other black or navy basics to start off with your capsule wardrobe foundation.

Step 2 :  Select Neutral Colour Essentials to add to your base

Secondly add essentials that are classy and timeless in neutral colours such as  grey, black, white, beige, brown,  olive or navy or denim items to compliment your base. For example the black skinny jeans you have can be paired with these neutral colours and always look timeless. Make sure you pay attention to the quality of material when choosing essentials to ensure that they last long and also can be layered. Good items to mention here are different shirts, long sleeve blouses , turtlenecks,a nice cardigan or Blazer.

Step 3: Choose your Accent Colours

This step is really fun and gives your wardrobe a personal touch depending on which colours you like to wear and add accents with. For example, if you are a person who loves the accent colour red or you prefer a soft mint green, this   a twist to your everyday outfits. You can add 2-3 accent colours depending on how colourful you like your wardrobe to be! Make sure that the accent colours match to your base colour. For example red is always good to pair with black or white but not so much with navy blue.

Step 4 : Add a few patterned items & accessories

To finish up your capsule wardrobe think about the patterns you like to wear. Are you a striped T-shirt person or do you have a love for checkers ? Add some of your favourite patterned items like floral shirts, flannels, blouses and striped shirts.

Or add your favourite trench coat or denim jacket to make your style unique to you!

Think about the accessories you would like to wear on an everyday basis. Are you a gold or silver jewelry person ? Do you like to wear rings or prefer necklaces?

Make sure to invest in quality pieces when it comes to jewelry to make sure the pieces are long lasting and looking good, even in a couple of years!

The key to a functional closet is to make sure everything coordinates together.  If you are missing any items, make sure you know what you need before you go shopping.

Questions I ask myself before I go shopping:

1. Does it go with the other items in my capsule?

2. How many outfits can I create with this item?

3. Does it fit with my personal style?

4. Does the fit and fabric work for me?

5. Will this work with my lifestyle?

Try to avoid browsing the sales and give yourself time to think about a new item before you buy it. When I’m considering a new purchase, I ask myself these questions.  This helps me stay focused on what will work in my wardrobe and avoid useless spending.
